With his parents working in the city, ten-year-old Chuang is being raised by the rest of his family in his hometown. There, surrounded by aunts, uncles, and grandparents, he experiences a turbulent time marked by births, weddings, funerals, and numerous changes. Meanwhile, thousands of years of rural tradition clash with China’s progress in the early 1990s—a world in constant motion.
